Growing Girls, a 1949 classroom sex education film included in the BFI’s DVD compilation The Joy of Sex Education. It was shot at what was then Wimbledon Chase Girls’ Grammar School. I was a pupil there from 1983-6 – after it had become Wimbledon Chase Middle School, and co-educational, meaning that, thankfully, gender reassignment surgery wasn’t necessary for me to get in! I remember being shown the film in a science lesson there, as one of the final generation of children to experience 16mm movies in the classroom. Mr. McAdam, the science teacher, was a big fan of classroom films, and showed us one in most of his lessons. The school is now Wimbledon Chase Primary (elementary) School. There is no explicit content in this video (which is possibly why none of us had any idea what it was trying to tell us).
The Joy of Sex Education, a DVD compilation published by the British Film Institute in 2008. This title appears no longer to be in print in the publisher’s own online catalogue, though amazon.co.uk is still selling new copies at the time of writing.
In The Moving Image, vol. 10, no. 1 (Spring 2010), pp. 159-161.
