This review essay compares four DVD and BD publications of the film Metropolis (Germany, 1927, dir. Fritz Lang) produced since the film’s first full-scale digital restoration in 2001. In doing so, I examine why this film has become the subject of more full-scale archival restoration projects than any other western feature, and discuss the implications of this for the tendency of canonisation in film studies.
